The Life of a Badass

Though my cousin would probably protest the label “Badass”, it suits her well. At first glance Chi Hieu’s small frame and short stature might lead you to believe that she is anything but extraordinary. But don’t be fooled!

I don’t really have the words to really paint an adequate picture of her life. She and her husband own a plot of land outside the city where they raise chickens, ducks and fish. This small farm is home to over 100 banana trees, a dozen jack-fruit trees and many other various plants. But this is only what she does in her free time. At the early age of 31 she supports her family (her husband, mom and dad) with a business she opened just about a year ago. She is a master at programming with a knack for business as she has signed deals with GPS companies all over Vietnam.

Chi Hieu lives between two houses. She maintains her parents’ house as well as her husband’s parents’ house. It is quite complicated being the eldest in the family, but she manages it well. The best part, she always does it with a smile. It is hard to believe that anything can bring her down. Truly resilient, I know that I have a lot to learn from her optimistic spirit alone.

On top of all of this, she is awesome on a motorbike. Cruising around HCMC on a motorbike is so much different than on foot or by taxi. We wove between cars, other bikes and pedestrians like it was our business! It was quite the adventure.
