This weekend I met up with some of the other Fulbright grantees. They helped Ba Ria Vung Tau Teacher Training College judge a speaking contest. Not to mention, they were great company for someone who doesn’t get to discuss politics and current events with anyone else very often (me). My school officials realized how out spoken I actually am when I have people to debate with (take that Vietnamese woman essence!) and they stared at me in awe as though I’d transformed into some hideous monster.
Then some of the other Fulbrighters came with me to the beach in Vung Tau city. Who knew playing Monopoly, a super crazy capitalist game, on the beach would attract so much attention? We did win the hearts of many Vietnamese as we purchased property, negotiated and then subsequently bankrupted one another. One guy bought us all ice cream and one group gave me some fruit! (Just in case you don’t know, despite being allergic to a variety of different fruit, I LOVE FRUIT! Not to mention the exotic fruit I run into in Vietnam.)
This particular fruit is apparently called trái vú sữa. Translated means breast milk fruit. Now, I don’t know what breast milk tastes like, but there was an episode of Friends a while back (DON’T JUDGE ME!) in which they discuss the taste of breast milk. Evidently, it tastes like cantaloupe. Guess what?!? That is kind of what the fruit tastes like!
The moment that sums up the weekend is when I rolled doubles, landed on Boardwalk and took a bite out of my breast milk fruit as I looked out over turbulent sea shore.
